Robeson residents evacuated as crews fight woods fire
LUMBERTON, N.C. (AP) — Robeson County officials evacuated as many as 40 homes as a wildfire that had been controlled sprang to life and burned 100 to 200 acres of woods.
Residents were allowed to return to their homes last night after the blaze was contained again. Officials warned those with respiratory problems to stay away until smoke cleared.
No homes were destroyed as personnel from 17 fire departments fought to keep the fire from jumping a road to the homes.
County Fire Marshal Charles Britt says one firefighter and one resident were treated for heat exhaustion.
