Authorities investigate exposed human bones at cemetery

MOUNT HOLLY (AP) — Authorities are trying to determine if charges should be filed after exposed human bones were found in a cemetery just outside Charlotte.

Gaston County Police Captain Calvin Shaw says officers with a search warrant yesterday at Beasley's Memorial Garden just north of Mount Holly found bones on the ground with new dirt in some of the cemetery's low areas.

Shaw says it appears they were trying to fill low areas with dirt taken from other parts of the cemetery that contained human remains.

No one had been charged with a crime. Shaw says the Gaston County Health Department and the North Carolina Board of Funeral Service are assisting in the investigation.

The bones are being held as evidence.
