ECU Pirates dominate UNCG in baseball; North Brunswick whips Wallace-RH

GREENVILLE, NC (ECU) — Travis Watkins continued to swing a hot bat belting his second homer of the season, a grand slam, propelling East Carolina to an 8-1 win over UNC Greensboro Wednesday afternoon at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The Pirates improved to 10-6 on the season and 10-5 at home, while the Spartans dropped to 5-9.
Kirk Morgan (3-0) picked up his third win in relief striking out four in 2.2 innings. Starter Nick Durazo allowed one run (earned) on six hits with a couple of punch-outs in four innings of work. Joe Ingle (1.1 IP, 2 BBs) and Ross Gardner (1.0 IP) tossed the final 2.1 frames without surrendering a run following a 44-minute weather delay in the top of the seventh.
Blair Betts (0-1) took the loss giving up five runs (all earned) on three hits while issuing five walks. Daniel Dulaney made his first start of the season tossing two shutout innings before handing the ball over to Bryant Stafford, who gave up a run (earned) on three hits in two frames. Collin Woody (0.1 IP, 2 Rs) and Julian Abreau (2.0 IP) closed out the game for the Spartans on the mound.
Seven Pirates combined for all 12 hits on the day with Garrett Brooks, Bryce Harman, Jackson Mims, Watkins and Charlie Yorgen each collecting two. Yorgen scored a game-high two runs, while Watkins drove in a career-best four runs.

The Pirates will travel to Elon for their first road series of the season. Game one of the three-game non-conference tilt is scheduled for Friday, Mar. 13 at 4 p.m. (ET), followed by a 2 p.m. and a 1:30 p.m. start time on Saturday and Sunday.
How It Happened:
With a one-all tie going to the bottom of the sixth, ECU sent 11 batters to the plate scoring seven runs on four hits taking a commanding 8-1 lead. Hunter Allen’s RBI single scored Brooks for the go ahead run and eventual game-winner. Allen scored on a wild pitch to make it a 3-1 contest before Watkins laced a bases clearing shot over the left field wall, the first grand slam for the Pirates since 2013.

ECU picked up its second win over UNCG this season evening the all-time series at eight games a piece … Allen (5 games), Brooks (5), Watkins (7) and Yorgen (10) all extended their current hit streaks on the season … Yorgen also extended his streak of reaching base safely to 16 games – a career-high … With his two hits, Watkins has registered six multi-hit games during his seven-game hit streak where he is batting .556 (15-for-27) with seven RBI and three runs scored … Prior to the start of the game, Watkins was named to the initial Johnny Bench Award Watch List presented by the Wichita Sports Commission marking the third-straight year he has appeared on the list … Luke Lowery’s sac fly RBI in the third that plated Yorgen extended his current streak to eight games with an RBI (9 of 11 games).
