UNCW holds annual Beach Blast

WILMINGTON — In the past UNCW’s beach blast has caused major headaches for residents of Wrightsville Beach and those who have to clean up.

So far officials say there have been no problems with things such as alcohol, litter and out of control behavior.

Beach Blast is a party held annually by UNCW for freshman coming to the college to get to know one another.
Previously Wrightsville Beach residents complained about the amount of leftover trash on the beach, underage drinking and unruly behavior.

This year, a number of police officers patrolled the party.

Participants also had to show a valid UNCW ID to get in and get free food. Officials were also checking bags and coolers to make sure no one was trying to bring in any alcohol.

Director of Campus Life Carolyn Farley said, “Concern for making sure everyone is following the rules and respecting Wrightsville Beach residents and respect and to have an appropriate UNCW party. ”

The philosophy for this year’s beach blast is “come for fun… leave only footprints.”

To help make sure that only footprints were left on the beach several dozen volunteers from UNCW headed back to the beach to clean up all the trash.
