WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — UNCW dominated doubles play and then swept the first five singles matches off the court to blow past UMBC, 5-2, in collegiate women’s tennis action Monday at the UNCW Courts.

The Seahawks improved to 4-6 this season with the non-conference victory under near-perfect conditions. UMBC dropped to 3-8 this spring.

“We played a solid match today against a dangerous UMBC team,” said first-year UNCW Coach John Ware. “They played a lot of offense against us and it was good to see how our readiness and discipline can keep us in points and give us more chances to play our own offense when the time is right.

“We got off to a great start in doubles. The doubles point is so critical and it was great momentum going into singles. We can all continue to improve as competitors and trust that even when our games are a little off, we can find ways to win.”

In doubles, UNCW’s No. 3 team of Hollie Champion and Alix Theodossiou bageled UMBC’s Madlena Kurasz and Laura Ambrozic, 8-0, before the top tandem of Christine Kharkevitch and Annika Sillanpaa cruised over Shannon Cleary and Mariami Dolashvili, 8-3, to give the Seahawks the early point.

UNCW continued its strong play in singles by winning the first five matches, including the clincher by senior Hamilton Lovett at the No. 5 position. Lovett outlasted Ambrozic, 1-6, 6-0, 6-1, to even her singles record at 5-5 this season.

Senior Alyssa Ritchie improved to a team-best 8-2 in singles by blasting Dolashvili, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 to give UNCW a 2-0 lead and Theodossiou’s 6-3, 6-4 verdict over Hanna Victorsson at the No. 4 slot increased the score 3-0, setting up Lovett’s clinching match.

Senior Miller Hales added a victory at No. 6 singles when the Wilmington product trimmed Cleary, 7-5, 6-4.

The Seahawks close out a three-match home stand on Friday, March 20, with a 2 p.m. match against state foe N.C. Central.
