Navy Corpsman to be honored with Silver Star
CAMP LEJEUNE, NC — A Camp Lejeune Navy Corpsman will be awarded the Silver Star Friday.
A MARSOC spokesperson says Petty Officer 1st Class Kevin D. Baskin will be honored aboard Stone Bay at Camp Lejeune 2:00 p.m. Friday. They say the medal will be awarded to Baskin for his heroic actions while deployed to Afghanistan in 2013.
According to a news release, Baskin saved the lives of four of his team members. It says when his team was attacked, Baskin ran into a kill zone to help wounded Marines. Even though he was shot in the back, MARSOC officials said Baskin continued to treat the injured and refused medical aid for his injuries. After helping the wounded, they say Baskin helped to lay down suppressive fire until every member of the team evacuated the area.
Major Gen. Joseph L. Osterman, commander of MARSOC, will present the award.
