City Council to discuss reduced speed limits

Tuesday night’s Wilmington City Council meeting may have you backing off the gas pedal. Council members are looking at lower speed limits on some city streets.

Council members could vote in favor of reducing the speed limit in certain areas from 35 to 25 mph.

Those areas include streets near Airlie Road, including Airlie Brook and Bar Harbor.

Another proposed area to lower the limit includes Northwood Estates and Summer Haven.

Finally, the area between Red Cross Street, Third Street and the Cape Fear River is being considered for a change.

Betty Stott lives in one of the proposed areas and is in favor of a reduced speed limit.
Although, she’s skeptical about people obeying a 25 mph limit on Airlie Road.

Stott said, “They speed all the time. It’s hard for people to ride bikes or walk for speeding cars. It’s really bad, it’s dangerous.”

Some of Stott’s neighbors told me they think Airlie Road seems more like a highway with the way people speed.

Neighbors say this is a great idea, especially for residential areas where children are playing.
