WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — Sophomore Peyton Jordan (Marvin Ridge H.S./Waxhaw, N.C.) and freshman Sarah Davis (Walter Williams H.S./Burlington, N.C.) combined to allow just one run on eight hits as UNCW (13-11) swept a non-conference doubleheader over East Carolina (8-25) at Boseman Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Seahawks, who were wrapping up a seven-game homestand, posted a 2-0 victory in the first game before claiming a 5-1 triumph in the nightcap.
Jordan, who improved to 4-1, earned the victory in the first game after allowing just four hits en route to her second shutout of the season. She also recorded four strikeouts and walked two while making her third start of the season.
Meanwhile, Davis scattered four hits in the nightcap while allowing an unearned run in the seventh inning. She upped her record to 5-4 on the season after posting four strikeouts with two walks. Davis did not allow a hit until the fifth inning.
Freshman Abby Harris (Jack Britt H.S./Fayetteville, N.C.) led the Seahawks’ 13-hit attack by going 3-for-4 in the doubleheader. She had a pinch hit single in the sixth inning of the first game before a 2-for-3 effort in the nightcap with a run scored and an RBI.
Freshman Karlie Smith (Indian River H.S./Dagsboro, Del.) and senior Abby Wynne (North Pitt H.S./Greenville, N.C.) each recorded two hits to lead East Carolina, which has dropped seven games in a row.
How It Happened – Game 1: The Seahawks scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning for the only runs of the game. Senior Casey Rowland (Colonie Central H.S./Albany, N.Y.) gave UNCW a 1-0 lead with an RBI single up the middle before Harris drove her in with a run-scoring single to left field. Meanwhile, Jordan did not allow an ECU runner to reach past second base until the seventh inning.
How It Happened – Game 2: In a similar fashion to the first game, the Seahawks used a big inning to claim the victory. They scored all five of their runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead they did not relinquish. Harris gave UNCW a 1-0 lead with a double to right field before scoring on an ECU error. A fielder’s choice and subsequent throwing error upped the advantage to 4-0 before Davis hit a sacrifice fly added the Seahawks’ fifth run.
