Gabrielle passes through Outer Banks with little impact

NAGS HEAD, N.C. (AP) — Ferry service has resumed to Ocracoke Island as remnants of Tropical Storm Gabrielle moved away from North Carolina.

Ferry service was suspended yesterday because of the storm, which brought 50 miles per hour winds and up to eight inches of rain to the Outer Banks.

Gabrielle was downgraded to a tropical depression this morning. The storm is moving away from North Carolina at 12 miles an hour. Highest winds dropped to 35 miles an hour. The storm was about 140 miles north-northeast of Cape Hatteras.

Carteret County got as much as eight inches of rain.

State Highway 12 was covered by more than a foot of water yesterday near Salvo. That's not unusual for that area and the road is open. Parts of Highway 101 and Highway 70 in Carteret County remained open even with water over them.
