Insurance commissioner pushes for better window standards

WILMINGTON (AP) — North Carolina's insurance commissioner is pushing for windows in new homes along the coast to be protected from the debris thrown around by hurricanes.

Jim Long agrees with members of the insurance industry on the issue.

As it stands now, new homes built within 15-hundred feet of the ocean have to have certain window protection that could keep out rain, wind and debris that cause more damage.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, the insurance industry and manufacturers have urged North Carolina to adopt international building code standards.

If the state had tougher standards, homes would need upgrades. And homebuilders argue that the increased cost would be higher than the risk of damage.
