Illegal immigrant found guilty of murder in fatal N.C. crash

SALISBURY, N.C. (AP) — An illegal immigrant is set to be sentenced today in Rowan County court for the death of a pregnant woman.

Rigo Verto Guillen-Martinez was drunk when he hit Leeanna Newman's car last February.

He could face up to 30 years in prison.

A jury handed down the verdict for Guillen-Martinez yesterday.

Police have said he had a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit after the crash. Newman and her unborn baby died a short time later. Her 21-month-old daughter was in a car seat and suffered minor injuries.

Guillen-Martinez's lawyer had argued that his client couldn't be guilty of murder because there was no malice in his actions.
