Hundreds celebrate Head Start anniversary

WILMINGTON — Hundreds of New Hanover County children celebrated a special anniversary Tuesday.

Children and teachers from New Hanover County’s Head Start program released red, white and blue balloons to celebrate Head Start’s 40 years in the county.

Two-hundred-sixty children participate in the federally-funded program in New Hanover County.

Head Start focuses on academic skills, health and nutrition and family services for low-income preschoolers.

Cynthia Brown with New Hanover County Head Start said, “Doing a really fantastic job of preparing children for kindergarten makes me feel good to be a part of that and to see how we’re helping to build the future of this county.”
