Proposal would put more law enforcement in schools

WILMINGTON — Wilmington Police officers and New Hanover County Sheriff’s deputies may join forces to patrol local schools.

After several recent lockdowns at local schools the WPD asked City Council to hire four police officers to work alongside the sheriff’s deputies. They would help patrol Hoggard and New Hanover High Schools, along with five area middle schools.

The proposal would cost the city around $100,000 and could go into effect by January.
