New Hanover High student charged in shooting

WILMINGTON — We’re learning more about the New Hanover County High School student charged in a shooting near the school last week.

It turns out that student was actually arrested later in the day in the school.

New Hanover High School Principal Chris Furr says the student was arrested on campus in PE class by the school resource officer.

The shooting happened just blocks away and prompted four area schools to go on lock down. New Hanover High was one of them.

Furr says once law enforcement informed school authorities that three of the four suspects were in custody, the schools once again opened their doors. That’s when the fourth suspect — who was a student — went to school and to class after allegedly shooting a man.

Furr says the student was not in class in the morning and after the incident when he was, didn’t bring the gun in to the school.

Furr says the gun was never brought on school grounds. The student is no longer at New Hanover High and is facing disciplinary action along with criminal charges.
