Oak Island pier to close

OAK ISLAND — News broke this morning that the Yaupon Beach fishing pier will be closing because of financial issues.

The pier in Oak Island is one of several local properties tied up in a legal battle between developers and the bank.

Oak Island Mayor Johnie Vereen says the attorneys who now control the pier think it’s too expensive to operate seven days a week. They’re apparently making efforts to keep it open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The town of Oak Island had the option to buy the pier for about $2 million in order to keep it open, but town council voted against the idea on Tuesday.
