Brunswick County School Board investigating possible assault on student

BRUNSWICK COUNTY — The Brunswick County School Board is investigating a possible assault by a male teacher on a female student.

Parents whose children go to North Brunswick High School in Leland say yesterday afternoon, a teacher hit a female student.

Brunswick County School Superintendent Katie McGee said an incident did occur yesterday at the high school, and that the school board is investigating.

The exact details of the investigation are not being released.

She also would not confirm which teacher is being investigated but did say that assistant football coach Mike Dumas was suspended with pay Wednesday.

Dumas was hired by North Brunswick High School in April of 1980. He is currently employed in the schools physical education department.

We tried to contact Dumas Thursday but could not get in touch with him.

One parent who knows Dumas says he is a good teacher and trusts his judgment and thinks the investigation will reveal he did nothing wrong.
