70 probation violators arrested in Wilmington sweep

WILMINGTON (AP) — Police have arrested 70 people wanted for violating the terms of their probation in Wilmington.

Officials say one person tried to hide under a pile of laundry, another ran from officers and several lied about their identity.

Cocaine, heroin and marijuana were among the drugs confiscated during the sweep, which started last week and ended Saturday.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Dan Wertheimer says the operation started because his office noticed a high number of outstanding arrest warrants for probation violations.

Wilmington police were assisted by the U.S. Marshals Service and state agents.
