More details expected from police investigating Nebraska mall shootings
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — More details on the Nebraska mall shooting rampage are expected at a police news conference today in Omaha.
A gunman armed with what was an old Russian military rifle walked into the mall and started shooting from a third-floor balcony. Eight people were fatally wounded before the 19-year-old
man turned the gun on himself and took his own life.
Five people were wounded, including one man who remains hospitalized in critical condition. One panicked shopper cut his face when he ran into a clothing rack.
Police think the shootings were random. They’ve identified the gunman as Robert Hawkins. He’s described as a troubled young man. His parents had kicked him out of the house last year. He lost his job at a McDonald’s this week and he had recently broken up with
his girlfriend.
In a suicide note, he wrote that he was “sorry for everything,” adding, quote, “Now I’ll be famous.”
