Laney senior helps friend in need
WILMINGTON — One Laney High School student has turned his class project into a mission to help a friend.
Senior James Cook’s family friend is suffering from cancer. He’s undergoing treatment, but his insurance doesn’t cover all of his medical bills.
So Cook organized a 5K race to raise money for him. Saturday, more than 50 runners participated in the race at Laney High School.
“I think he’s come upon hard times and we should, you know, look out for him,” said Cook. “I mean we’re friends with his family and he couldn’t help that this happened to him so I think we need to step up and do something for him.”
Cook says he raised close to $2,500.
