Former inmate speaks out
WILMINGTON — In light of the recent death of Brunswick County Jail inmate Senaca Vaught, a former Brunswick County inmate spoke out about her concerns about the treatment of inmates.
The woman didn’t want her identity revealed, but felt strongly about what she said she saw when she served time in the Brunswick County Jail two years ago. She said, “I saw a lot of things going on that I didn’t think was actually right.”
She said she was disturbed to see how guards treated a fellow inmate when the inmate didn’t follow orders. “She wouldn’t get up off the bed so the jailiff came in there and drug her out the bed and after she drug her out the bed, she almost hit her head on the floor and she sprayed some pepper spray in her eyes ’cause the girl started fighting back,” she said.
The former inmate also said she was denied immediate medical treatment and phone access. She said, “I just want to see a big change, an investigation done on the incident that happened with the young man inside the Brunswick County Jail.”
The last inmate death in Brunswick County Jail was in April 2005.
