Health concerns about baby products

There are new concerns tonight about potentially harmful chemicals found in baby-care products.

Phthalates are chemicals added to plastic to make it flexible. They’re also used as solvents in many personal care products, from nail polish to shampoos.

Phthalates have been around for decades, but recently some experts have started to question the safety of these chemicals.

A new study on 163 infants found that most tested positive for phthalate derivatives.

Researchers say babies are exposed to the chemicals through the use of lotion, shampoos, and powders.

Whether the infants are harmed from phthalates is a source of current controversy.

Evidence from animal studies suggests that phthalates can disrupt hormones and affect reproductive function.

The United States Food and Drug Administration previously reviewed the evidence on phthalates and found insufficient proof of harm to humans, though they continue to monitor the situation.

But some feel that, where there is doubt, infants in particular should be protected.

Experts recommend that parents who wish to limit their children’s exposure to phthalates should reduce babies’ use of cosmetic products to the minimum needed for proper hygiene.
