NC DMV: Expect longer lines, three-week delay
RALEIGH (AP) — Division of Motor Vehicles officials say lines are about to get longer.
They say changes will take up to three weeks to get a permanent driver’s license.
DMV Commissioner Bill Gore says new laws are taking effect to ensure licenses are issued only to legal U.S. residents. Gore says that means more work for division employees and a new procedure to get a license.
Starting July 1st, people seeking a new or renewed license will get a temporary permit while the cards are made. The new license will be mailed in 20 days.
North Carolina will begin complying with a new federal law by the end of the year that requires each of the state’s six million license holders to affirm their legal residence in the country.
That will double the amount of time it takes to deal with each customer.
