Pro-weight disorder sites becoming more popular with teens

WILMINGTON — As the internet becomes more and more a part of our daily lives the effects will continue to be seen in our younger population.

The education director of Wilmington Health Access for Teens, Geoff Zuckerman says pro-anorexic and pro-bulimic websites are becoming more popular among teens. He says there are hundreds of websites supporting, promoting and glorifying eating disorders.

Zuckerman says as models and actresses become thinner, the number of teens striving for that look will increase. And the way they will try to attain it won’t be healthy.

“There are definitely going to be more young people accessing those web sites and becoming better at becoming anorexic or bulimic and also finding better ways to hide their disorders,” Zuckerman said.

Zuckerman says parents need to monitor what websites their teens are visiting.

He also recommends placing your computer in a public part of the home, and not in the teen’s bedroom.
