Touring Wilmington

If you live here in Wilmington, it’s easy to take all of our sites and tourist attractions for granted.

Today many of those attractions were free of charge for New Hanover County residents.

The USS North Carolina is just a quick trip over the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge. It’s the navy’s third ship to bear the North Carolina name. It hasn’t been used since world war two, but today many youngsters took turns operating the vessel’s cannons.

“It’s really, really, really, really, really, really easy,” said young gunner Devin Phillips.

It’s not quite spring, but many flowers in Airlie Gardens were in bloom. Wilmington resident Tony Brigman took his family out there today. Something he says he doesn’t get to do often enough.

“I was raised and born in Wilmington so just to spend some time out here with my family is awesome, great time,” Brigman said.

Back downtown at the Cape Fear museum, the subject of the hour was the ocean at the museum’s newest exhibit.

“It’s really, REALLY cool,” said eight year old Sehth Pulsifer.

All the site-seeing works up an appetite.

Fat Tony’s downtown for some pub grub and ghost stories, narrated by none other than Lew Musser — Wilmington’s own haunted historian.

“Cape Fear is a fearful place, it’s a creeped-out old and we have many stories to chose from,” Musser said.

So much to do, so little time. And it’s that time of year again.

Us hometown tourists will soon be replaced by the real thing.

“We’re looking forward to another big tourist season here,” Lew Musser said. “I’m glad you could come see us before all the tourists flock back in.”
