Two firefighters killed in Salisbury

SALISBURY, N.C. (AP) — A hospital official says two firefighters have died fighting a five-alarm fire at a wood millworks in Rowan County.

Rowan Regional Medical Center spokesman Michael Burton says one firefighter was dead on arrival at the hospital and a second firefighter died after being taken to the hospital.

Burton says two other firefighters hurt in the blaze at Salisbury Millworks are being treated for first and second degree burns. Burton says doctors don’t consider their injuries severe.

Burton says a third firefighter injured in the blaze has been sent to North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. Officials there would not talk about the firefighter.

The fire started about 7 a.m. Firefighters from across the county are working on the blaze but the facility appears to be a total loss.
