Downtown Wilmington goes green for St. Patrick’s Day

WILMINGTON — Downtown Wilmington went green Saturday. That’s when the city celebrated St. Patrick’s Day.

In Wilmington people of all ages wore green as part of their tribute.

The festival, on the corner of Princess and Water Streets, featured Irish food, music and of course — lots and lots of beer.

Attendee Tom Getz said, “You couldn’t drink the water [back then], so everybody in Europe drank beer. Really that’s it. So we’re just carrying on the tradition.”

Monday of course is the actual holiday.

St. Patrick was a fifth century Christian missionary and a patron saint of Ireland. According to legend he is credited with banishing snakes from the island.
