Elderly woman attacked, police look for suspect
WILMINGTON — Wilmington Police are searching for the person who attacked an elderly woman inside her downtown home early Saturday morning.
It happened along the 400 block of Nun Street around 5:30 a.m.
Saturday afternoon Wilmington police were out canvassing the neighborhood looking for information about the crime.
Detectives say a man pushed a ninety-five-year-old woman into her home after she came out of the house to get her newspaper. He stole cash, then sexually assaulted and beat the woman.
She was taken to the hospital. One of her injuries include severe damage to one of her eyes.
Neighbor Deborah Butler said, “The victim is an elderly lady, salt of the earth. Kind, dear, mild mannered, doesn’t have any family to speak of and just a treasure of the neighborhood stories have been written about her. She planted the flowers in my yard just a few years ago. It really makes us all sick as can be about it.”
The attacker is believed to be a black man with no facial hair. He’s about five-foot-five, about 160 pounds. At the time, he was wearing dark pants and a wine-colored jacket with yellow or gold writing.
