Community rallying around elderly attack victim

WILMINGTON — Some Wilmington residents are angry after learning about an assault on their elderly neighbor. She’s 95 years old. The attack happened Saturday, inside her own home.

As you might imagine the people who live near her were shocked and disgusted when they heard about the attack. They say their neighbor is like family.

Saturday morning the woman was getting her newspaper from the sidewalk along the 400 block of Nun St. Police say a short, clean-cut black man forced the woman into her home, stole cash then assaulted her.

The community is rallying around the victim preparing to help her as she recovers.

Concerned neighbor Valerie Foote said, “I figured I could bring her some food, some comfort food. It’s the only thing I thought I could do. What can you do?”

The elderly victim was able to help Wilmington police to create this sketch. The woman says her attacked was clean-shaven and wearing dark pants and a wine colored shirt with yellow letters.

If you have any information call the Wilmington Police Department at 343-3600.
