25-year-old time capsule unveiled

CAROLINA BEACH — It’s back in time at Carolina Beach elementary school. Students and former students opened up a 25-year-old time capsule. Some of the items were old pictures and comic books.

Former student Patrick Boykin and former teacher Lena Boykin went back in time to 1983 as contents from their time capsule were stretched across the library at Carolina Beach elementary.

“We put some things in a metal box 25 years ago,” Patrick said. “And they’re just the way
we put them in their 25 years ago it is just amazing.”

“It has been absolutely wonderful,” Lena said. “A lot of work went into getting this
together, and the public response has been absolutely wonderful.”

The mother-son duo along with other alums rediscovered items they had placed in the capsule, ranging from a flower pot and homework assignments to just a plain old shoe.

“Google didn’t even exist then,” Patrick said. “We had MS-DOS and a big huge computer so
the way that these guys remember things and the way that they make their time capsule is going to be completely different.”

Flash forward to 2008 and current Carolina Beach Elementary kids are putting new items into their time capsule like a cell phone, a Sony Play Station, a Spider-Man lunch box, Croc
shoes, and a Hannah Montana t-shirt.

“They’ll have some of the same but different memories and the way that they keep those memories for the next 25 years.” Patrick said.

The current capsule won’t be unveiled until 2033.
