Fayetteville hotel that catered to blacks to be razed

FAYETTEVILLE — A Fayetteville hotel that provided rooms for black travelers during the era of segregation is facing the wrecking ball.

The hotel was built in 1910, but The Fayetteville Observer reports that in recent years, the hotel has fallen into disrepair.

The city condemned it in December 2006.

Unless someone comes up with the funds, a local demolition company will begin tearing it down on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

City inspector Jim Alexander says the building has badly deteriorated over the years and has sat vacant. He first gave the family of owner Alfred Davis six months to do repairs, then granted a six-month extension. Alexander said the family finally decided it didn’t have the money.

The cost to bring the building up to code was estimated at $100,000.
