City of Wilmington approves tax increase

It’s official- if you own a home in Wilmington, you’ll not only pay more taxes to the county, but also to the city.

In a 6 to 1 vote last night, Wilmington City Council approved a 128 million dollar budget for the fiscal year starting July 1st.

Like the county’s new budget it includes a property tax increase of three and a quarter cents per $100 dollars of value.
The majority of that money will help make up for last year’s county tax error.
If your home is worth $250,000 dollars expect to pay $81 dollars a year more just to the city.

City council woman Laura Padgett told NewsChannel three that the city added an extra cent to help offset the county’s six million dollar deficit. Mayor Bill Saffo said despite the tough budget year, he and the Council were proud to make a tough decision of increasing firefighters’ and police officers’ salaries.
