Shooting victim plans community watch including armed patrol

CHARLOTTE — A man who survived a shooting at a local bar is starting an armed patrol in his community in a move that has alarmed residents and concerned police.

The Charlotte Observer reported Tuesday that Scott Yamanashi formed Neighborhood Watch Alliance, which is comprised of some of his friends from businesses off Central Avenue. He said the plan is to patrol the area with handguns, flashlights and notepads.

Yamanashi’s plan has raised questions among officers who don’t want residents to think they can take matters into their own hands. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Sgt. Tonya Arrington says while she’s glad residents are getting involved, there is some concern any time
weapons are involved.

Leslie Shinn, president of the Plaza Midwood Neighborhood Association, said the best way to combat crime is neighbors watching out for neighbors without guns.
