GE looks to bring uranium enrichment to Wilmington
GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy wants to bring a uranium enrichment plant to Wilmington.
Right now, GE gets enriched uranium from outside companies.
Officials want to be able to enrich it themselves.
If the plant is approved by the nuclear regulatory commission, it would be located next to the current GE building off Castle Hayne Road.
The enriched uranium would be used to produce energy for GE’s nuclear plants.
The $700 million dollar project would bring 900 jobs to the area.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is holding a public meeting tonight at UNCW’s Burney Center Ballroom at 6:00 p.m. to answer residents’ questions and concerns.
