German students visiting the area

Some German kids are spending a few weeks of their summer in our area.

The exchange program is sponsored by IKA, a company that has offices in Germany and in New Hanover County.

More than a dozen German students, ages 12 to 16, from Staufen are staying in Rocky Point.

Today they learned about blacksmithing.

They will also horseback ride, get swimming lessons and learn about America’s favorite pass time.

Exchange student Simon Schwranenhorst said, “Baseball is not so popular in Germany but it’s a great sport. I like it.”

“Next week, we will go to the beach and we will learn how to surf and go shopping,” said student Tara Sahle.

This is the second year for the program for children of IKA employees.

The kids arrived Wednesday and will return to Germany in two weeks.
