County commissioners want to talk trash

They have asked the county to build a five member solid waste task force to determine how the county gets rid of its garbage.

The goal is to reach the best financial and environmental way for New Hanover County to handle curbside recycling and future landfill needs.

Back in May, the commissioners asked haulers that run the landfill and the county incinerator to make presentations of how they would run New Hanover County’s trash program.

County Commissioner Bill Kopp said, “We also need to look at the green movement, and make sure we are doing everything humanly possible to conserve energy, not only in NHC but everywhere in North Carolina.”

Currently, WASTEC operates the only incinerator in the state.

Kopp is concerned that with the high price of fuel lately, operating the incinerator has not been cheap.
