‘Friends of Fort Fisher’ unveil the newest addition to Fort Fisher State Historic Site

KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The ‘Friends of Fort Fisher’ organization unveiled their newest onsite exhibit at the Fort Fisher State Historic Site.

The exhibit features a replica of the most powerful weapon used by confederates when they defended the fort during the Civil War.

Rod Gragg, a Civil War writer says the Armstrong Rifled cannon is the great secret weapon of its day.

“It’s extremely important historically, but also because it really is a sight that showcases American courage and sacrifice,” he says.

The original cannon was a gift given to the fort from the Queen of England during the American Civil War.

Gragg says receiving this cannon is a milestone for the organization, and they can’t wait to show it off.
