Wave Transit holds meetings on possible fare increases

Rising fuel costs have Wave Transit considering higher bus fares. Today they held a meeting to get the publics input.

Wave Transit leaders say the extra fee is necessary to offset the price they’re spending on fuel.

Wave Transit wants to raise its daily fare from $1 to a $1.50.

Frequent riders who purchase a $40, 31-day pass could start paying $60.

Earlier today they held a public meeting at their office on Castle Street.

The few bus riders who did show up didn’t complain about the increase. In fact, many of the people WWAY spoke to today say they’re ok with it.

Linda Pigford who agrees with the fare increase said, “Well, I’m ok with it because just like everything else it has to go up, and regardless you have to use it…if you have to use public transportation, so I’m ok with it.”

Last year Wave spent $750,000 on fuel for its buses. This year Wave anticipates spending $1,000,000.

Wave is having two more public forums. The next one is August 28 at 6 p.m. The final forum is September 11 at 10:30 a.m.

Or, you can call them at 910-343-0106.

They will make their decision at the final hearing.
