Elizabeth City to add 18 security cameras
ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Elizabeth City plans to add 18 neighborhood security cameras to the six that police say have helped them make arrests in two shootings, a hit-and-run and a car
burglary.
The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reported that the city council paid $97,000 last year for the six cameras. The additional 18 cameras will cost $171,000.
Council member Betty Meiggs says the cameras could be divided among the four wards or police can put them where they’re needed the most. She says the cameras have made people feel safer.
The chairman of the Mayor’s Crime Task Force says the cameras have made the neighborhoods better places to live. The Rev. Wilbert Tatum says he thinks it would be ideal to have a camera on every corner.
