NC lighthouse finalist in restoration poll

MANTEO, N.C. — One of the lighthouses on the North Carolina Outer Banks has been selected as a finalist in a restoration contest sponsored by a window and door manufacturer.

Superintendent Mike Murray of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore said the Bodie Island Lighthouse was selected as one of three finalists in the public poll sponsored by JELD-WEN of Klamath Falls, Ore.

The voting cut 12 finalists to three during the past week. The park service said Friday the finalists are Bodie Island, Grand Traverse Lighthouse in Michigan and New Canal Lighthouse in
Louisiana.

The company will evaluate the lighthouses and determine a winner later this year.

Murray said 50 lighthouses were nominated initially.
