Habitual felon to serve 2 decades for bank robberies

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Otis McGill, 39, of Clarkton was sentenced to 2 decades in prison for 2 counts of Common Law Robbery and having obtained the status of a habitual felon.

According to District Attorney Ben David, on August 21, 2013, McGill went into the Western Union in downtown Wilmington and demanded money after discussing the cost of sending and receiving money with an employee. He implied he had a weapon before demanding the clerk give him money. Over $6,000 was stolen.

On September 6, 2013, McGill went to the Newbridge Bank on Military Cutoff Road in Wilmington and asked a clerk about a Visa card transaction. When the clerk asked McGill for his ID, McGill demanded money. More than $2,000 was stolen from the bank.

McGill pled guilty to both counts of Common Law Robbery and admitted his status as a Habitual Felon on March 31, 2015.

McGill has a lengthy criminal history including multiple convictions for Common Law Robbery. McGill has also been prosecuted in the past for being a Habitual Felon.

The investigation of this case was conducted by the Wilmington Police Department. The case was handled by Kristen Robinson with the District Attorney’s Office.
