New afterschool alternative for kids

Some Wilmington students had a new place to go after school today.

A new after school program opened its doors called the WIRE, which stands for Wilmington’s youth center for Inspiration, Recreation and Education.

It is also an alternative for students who are serving a suspension. The program serves New Hanover County’s at-risk upper middle school and high school students.

Jyanna Parker is attending the after school program. She said, “People other than me might be on the streets, and they can come here, or if you don’t have nothing to do or you don’t have no friends, you can come here and make new friends.”

The WIRE Center features computers, research materials, and tutoring, and there were many communities and schools of Cape Fear and several other organizations that worked to get the program up and running.
