Tour showcases secret gardens of the Port City

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — For more than 15 years, the Secret Garden Tour has given folks a chance to explore the gardens of some of Downtown Wilmington’s historic homes.

“It’s an opportunity to get around and walk about downtown and see how beautiful old Wilmington is,” said Marjorie Way, the vice president of the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society.

The Lower Cape Fear Historical Society is sponsoring the tour that features 13 gardens.

“You wouldn’t see it unless you were invited in,” Way said. “And fortunately, we have homeowners that have invited us into this garden. Aren’t we lucky?”

The flowers and foliage are off the main streets and normally hidden from view, but not this weekend.

“We’re looking at small gardens that you have to kinda go behind the gate, through the gate, behind the wall and behind the house,” Way said.

The Secret Garden Tour gives folks a chance to explore stunning private gardens but that’s not all.

“And then as a little special extra value this year we’ve spotted these wonderful community gardens all around Wilmington,” Way said.

These gardens are places people can grow fruits and vegetables in their neighborhoods and are open to anyone to use and cultivate.

“I’m just looking forward to sharing an October afternoon,” Way said. “Hopefully the sun will be shining and it’ll be a warm warm day and share the enthusiasm for gardening and the beautification of Wilmington.”
