$5M bond for man charged with 35 sex crimes involving child

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man is in the New Hanover County Jail under $5 million bond charged with dozens of sex crimes involving a child.

Robert Wayne Canady Jr., 51, faces 35 counts including first-degree rape, first-degree sexual offense with a child, child abuse sex act and indecent liberties with a child.

According to a warrant, at least some of the alleged crimes occurred in 2008-2013 with a child who is now 12 years old. A New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office spokesman could not immediate say if all the allegations against Canady involved a single victim.

Canady is due in court today.

The NC Department of Public Safety website shows Canady’s only conviction to date is for assault on a female in 1998.
