Seahawks will have to deal with growing pains this season
The 2008-2009 UNCW Seahawks are clearly a young team. There are 4 freshmen, 4 sophomores, and only one senior. The one senior, Marlo Davis, only played in half of last year’s games.
For head coach Benny Moss, this season is going to be a challenge. “It’s going to be fun to watch this young group grow up together, through the tough non-conference schedule, through conference play. We’re going to keep this group together the next 2-3 years. It’s going to be exciting to watch them develop over time,” said Moss.
It may take a lot of time to see results. The good thing is expectations are not as high as they normally are, due to all the new faces which include 3 transfers as well.
UNCW freshman forward, Brad Bald said, “I think we’re going to prove a lot of people wrong who don’t think we’re going far, because we’re young and undersized. But I think we’ll go far.”
Jason Aycock is the only local product on the team. He is a graduate of Cape Fear Academy.
The lone senior on the team, Marlo Davis talked about the pressure of being the only senior. He said, “It’s a little bit of pressure, but not so much because there were so many seniors last year and they helped us out a lot.”
Last season UNCW was a senior laden squad. They won 20 games in all. All 4 seniors started. Things will be a little different this year for the Seahawks.
As Coach Moss said, “Just give us a little bit of time.”
