WPD: Crime down in 2014

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A spokeswoman with the Wilmington Police Department released its annual report for 2014. The report includes a summary of everything from crime to police activity throughout the year.

Part of the data shows a drastic decline in downtown crime. It said from 2002-2014, crime downtown went down more than 70%. Employees of downtown businesses agree there has been a noticeable decrease in crime, but they still take precautions to keep everyone safe.

“We actually have around-the-clock security starting at 6:00 at night,” said Front Street Brewery General Manager Charles Archer. “We do that not only to protect our guests but also to protect our employees.”

Cpl. Brandon Reece with the Wilmington Police Department and the Downtown Task Force says a partnership with the downtown community and the police have led to the significant decrease in crime.

“Those relationships have done nothing but better the downtown business district all the way across the board,” said Reece.
