Four local high school bands showcased their talents Tuesday night

The Ashley High School band, the Laney band, the New Hanover band and Hoggard all performed Tuesday evening at Hoggard High School. It was the 12th Annual Marching Band Showcase.

“It means a lot. It’s a tradition here in North Carolina. It’s a big event and we love it,” said Hoggard High School’s Chelsea Williams.

The performance Tuesday was not a competition; instead it was a showcase of students from the four high schools.

Lashae Carr of New Hanover High School said, “We got Hoggard right there, we got Laney back there, and Ashley over there. I really believe this will be our night to shine.”

And shine they did. But they were not alone. Every band member and band director will likely tell you who the best is, if given a chance.

“I think the Ashley band is fantastic. They’ve been doing a lot of things in competitions. We have one more to go and we’re really psyched about where we’re going this year,” said Rob Parker, Ashley High School band director.

Elise Seifert of New Hanover High said, “It feels great to be center stage and for people to actually pay attention to you.”

The stands were packed with parents and students. Middle school band members also got the chance to perform a few songs in between each high school performance.

Many of our local marching bands compete on weekends after entertaining at half-time on Friday nights.
