NC woman dies after being hit by bus

RALEIGH — Police in Chapel Hill are investigating the second incident in six months where a bus struck and killed a pedestrian.

Officers from Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina were called to a collision involving a bus and a pedestrian Monday afternoon. Police said 33-year-old Valerie Hughes of Burlington was taken to the UNC Hospital, where she later died. The bus driver, James Willie Orr, was not hurt.

It’s the second time this year that a person died after being hit by a bus.

In May, UNC exchange student Lisa Carolyn Moran, of Scotland, was jogging through the south campus when she lost her footing and slid under a bus. The driver was not charged.
