On election’s eve, Obama stopping in Charlotte

CONCORD, N.C. — Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama has chosen North Carolina as one of his final campaign stops as he tries to swing the state to his party’s column for the first time in decades.

Obama plans to visit Charlotte on Monday evening, making his eighth trip to the state. The Illinois senator’s aggressive campaigning here has put him on the brink of victory, with polls
indicating North Carolina to be a tossup.

North Carolina hasn’t voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since Jimmy Carter in 1976.

Republican rival John McCain has been playing defense for much of the past month. He and running mate Sarah Palin have held seven events here in the past month, including Palin’s stop in Raleigh on Saturday.

Obama’s final campaign day also includes stops in Florida and Virginia.
