NC deputies look for man mistakenly released

WENTWORTH, N.C. — Rockingham County sheriff’s deputies are looking for an inmate who was mistakenly released from jail earlier this week.

The News & Record of Greensboro reported that 49-year-old Leon Oxendine Jr. of Eden was improperly released.

Oxendine had been in custody on a $1.5 million bond on five sexual assault charges. Deputies said he was released after returning from a court appearance Wednesday in which one of the
charges was dismissed.

Maj. J.V. Thomas said it appears there was a failure to properly check the paperwork involving Oxendine.
