Three Hoggard High students compete in state theatre festival

Three Hoggard High School theatre students won awards for their performance in the play, “Haiku”. Now they’re looking for even more recognition.

This week, the students will compete against 15 other schools from across the state. The students from teacher Alley Collin’s honors drama class are going to Greensboro for the North Carolina Theatre Conference State Play Festival. They will perform the play “Haiku”, written by Katherine Snodgrass.

The play is about a mother and her two daughters, one is autistic and the other comes home to help. The student’s performance has already won numerous regional awards. The class hopes to take home state honors.

Actress, Capers Beddoes said, “I love the fact that people get to see you in a different sense. They get to see you as a different person than you normally are from a day-to-day basis.”

Alley Collins said, “So I obviously want people walking away with this saying ‘Wow! Those people worked really hard.’ But I also want people to walk away and think. That’s what we always want with theater, is for your audience to leave thinking.”

The competition takes place at Greensboro College on Thursday. Laney High School and Cape Fear Academy will also compete, rounding out the top sixteen.

Whoever wins will advance to the Southeastern Theater Conference in Alabama that takes place in March.
